Remmy Ongala Mambo
At Zamba, we try to support our local community in every possible way, including supporting local musicians and artists. Currently, our featured artist is Remmy Ongala.
Remmy Ongala, known as the Voice of Tanzania, is a Congo-born artist, but was raised in Tanzania and in turn has a lot of pride for his country. The music style is known as Soukous and Remmy's music is particularly unique because he incorporates a variety of tribal languages and music into the songs. The lyrics are mostly in Swahili, but he sometimes translates sections into English, as he does in this song.
The song is a heartfelt ode to Africa, with its lyrics describing various areas in the continent. He repeatedly sings Narudi Nyumbani which in Swahili literally means "I'm going back home." If you listen carefully, you can hear him list many African countries, ex. Narudi Congo, Narudi Tanzania, which of course means "I'm going back to Congo" or "I'm going back to Tanzania" and so on.
In essence, this is not only a song for Africans, but truly a song for the human race. Our birthplace is Africa. Our true home is Africa. We would like to commend you for taking interest in our beautiful country of Tanzania, and seeking to discover your true heritage. We hope that one day you can sing along with Remmy when he says Narudi Nyumbani... I'm going back home...
